The Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games officially open on 4 February. By hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2022, China aims to attract people across the country to engage in snow and ice activities, bringing healthier lifestyles to China's citizens and many opportunities for local and regional development.  

Artificial turf is ideal for people to do exercise in winter as it won't be damaged by frost, ice or snow. However, proper maintenance is necessary to ensure its best conditions. How should we maintain our synthetic turf in cold winters? Here are a few tips that you can follow.

Do not let the snow pile up

In most cases, you can just wait for the snow to melt and drain naturally through the perforated backing. However, in case of heavy snow, you should not allow the snow to pile up too much. If the compacted snow turns into ice, it will make the grass brittle and dangerous to walk on.

Snow removal

Remove the compacted snow either by hand or with a plastic shovel (Do not use a metal one as it is more likely to damage blades). If you own a large synthetic field, you are recommended to use professional equipment, such as a snowblower, rotatory brush or rubber scraper.

Avoid use salt or chemicals

It is also suggested to avoid the use of rock salts and chemicals as they may damage the grass fibers. If the snow has already turned into packed ice, you may use heavy equipment to crush the ice and then clean the broken ice off the surface. The remaining ice should be allowed to melt and drain naturally into the soil.
